The Cradle of Maya Civilization

Northern Guatemala's Mirador Basin has accurately been labeled "the Cradle of Maya Civilization." This is because of the region's significance to the early preclassic history of the Maya civilization. It is home to the largest and earliest cities in the Maya world and is the area of many recent and important archaeological investigations.

Support FARES Research

Support of the Mirador Basin Project will retard the growth of slash and burn farming, looting and indiscriminate commercial development which threatens the region. Support is urgently needed to continue research and documentation of the origins and collapse of the ancient Maya in this area. A multi-disciplinary study of northern Guatemala is necessary because of the unique archaeological sites and natural environment which are now threatened. These sites and surrounding tropical forest are important to understanding the natural and cultural systems of ancient Mesoamerica.
